Land of Temples – Janjgir

Located in the heart of Chhattisgarh, Janjgir-Champa district is rich in history and tradition. The seat of power under Jajalladeva of the Kalachuri dynasty, the district is famous for its beautiful temples and its scenic landscapes. Janjgir-Champ district is also a major producer of food grains in Chhattisgarh. This unique tribal country is inhabited by extremely religious people. and all villages in the district worship their own local gods and goddesses. Thus there are numerous temples in the district that serve as major attractions for tourists.

One of the most revered temples is century Kalachuri temple dedicated t in the Purani Basti area of Janjgir. The is locally called Nakata Mandir (divided temple) because it was never complete and remains as two separate buildings. famous Kaleshwarnath Temple is on tilt banks of the Hasdeo and hosts a popular day fair on Mahashivaratri.

Twenty kilometers from Janjgir, on the  Sakti-Korba road, is the beautiful retreat of Damudhara. In addition to the many spectacular waterfalls and limestone caves, the Ram-Janki, Radha-Krishna and Rishavdev Temples are the most important tourist attractions. While in Janjgir-Champa, you will get ample opportunities to explore the tribal villages and get acquainted with the local culture and tradition. The womenfolk of the villages use various tattoos as their ornaments, which are even believed to accompany them to heaven after their demise.
